Chapter 30

Bathed in the fearsome midday heat of a glorious August summer, Mason slipped his Wayfarers on once again, unzipped his jacket until it was completely open and took a deep, relaxing breath. The warmth was a comforting tonic after so long in Driessen’s air-conditioned office.

“We should get back to the car as fast as we can,” he said. “It looks like we might have given the Illuminati Satanists the slip, but I don’t want to risk anything kicking off here at the Rijksmuseum like what happened back at the Louvre. It’s just too public and there are just too many civilians around.”

Alicia pointed off to their left. “I think it might be a little bit late for that, Mason.”

Mason looked through his sunglasses and recognised a familiar face standing over in the shadow of a restaurant awning. He was standing with several other men. “Abaddon.”

Holly began fretting. “Are you sure?”

“Yeah, I’m sure,” Mason said. “Take a close look and you’ll be sure to. You’ve had the pleasure of his company just as much as I have.”

Holly lowered her sunglasses and looked across the piazza in front of the museum. “Yeah, come to think of it that does look like Abaddon. I don’t recognise any of the other men though. No wait, I do! The man on the far right – I think they called him Dagon.” She turned and looked Mason square in the eyes. “One of the Fallen Angels.”

“Who moves next?” Baxter asked, looking up to Mason for an answer.

“They do,” Mason said. “Look.”

The cultists reached for their weapons and stormed forward. Seconds later, they were engaged in a fight as Abaddon struggled to wrench Holly away from the others. Mason and Alicia were first into the fray, wildly lashing out with kicks and punches and forcing the enemy away from Holly and Baxter. Holly got the message and stepped away from the fight, but Baxter charged forwards, throwing a punch and immediately knocking one of the men out. This changed the momentum of the brawl and improved the odds of success for Mason’s team.

Mason was once again in his element, finding himself boxing for his survival. He preferred the Queensberry Rules environment of the ring with a referee and padded gloves, but he’d done more than his fair share of bare-knuckle street fights in his time across the various agencies that he’d worked for over the years. As the sun beat down on his back, he almost found himself enjoying the fight, firing a punch forward and crunching one of the men’s noses, then a second punch that knocked him out, improving their odds all over again.

With two of the Satanic cultists now collapsed on the floor, Abaddon made the snap decision to up the ante and pulled a gun from a concealed shoulder rig. Mason guessed he had tried to keep the weapon out of sight to minimise public panic, but now that ship began to speedily sail away. A woman in the crowd saw the gun, pointed and screamed.
